Every semester, we take in an awesome group of interns. Maybe we’re a little biased, but our interns are some of the smartest, sweetest, and cutest interns on the planet! In conjunction with the 10 Ways To Be A Better Leader For Your Intern post by our Marketing Director Nina, her super fab intern, Reagan, took the opposite approach to the post. Here are our girl’s 10 tips to be a better intern!
Get To Know Your Leader
As an intern, you are there to help your leader with anything they might need but it is also important to create a relationship early on. Engaging in conversations that do not always revolve around work can establish a friendly relationship and allow you to get to know your leader on a more personal level.
There is no such thing as a dumb question, remember? If you find yourself confused on how to complete a task or what you should be doing next, do not be afraid to ask. Your leader is there to help you learn and asking questions will ensure the task is done correctly. Asking questions shows your leader you are interested and engaged in what you are working on.
Depending on the type of internship you are in, your list of necessities may be different. Find out early on what you need to bring everyday to ensure you are prepared early on. Take some extra time in the morning to go through your checklist. This extra step will save you the pain of asking other people in the office for a spare phone charger.
Dress for Success
Dressing appropriately is a key step when beginning an internship. If the dress code was not clearly described don’t be afraid to ask you leader to ensure your attire is office appropriate. Taking the time to put in effort into your wardrobe will show you are dedicated to your position.
Your internship should be an incredible experience and you were chosen for this position for a reason.
Arrive On Time
Arriving fashionably late is not something you should be doing as an intern. Once you have a set schedule, plan accordingly and set your alarms! If you are ever running late, informing you leader should always be your first step. Showing up on time, or even early, will show your leader you are organized and serious about your internship.
Socialize With Interns & Leaders
If you are lucky enough to get score an internship that has several other interns within the company, try and create a relationship with them! This is your chance to meet new people and build long lasting relationships. It is also a good idea to get to know other leaders within the company and be familiar with everyone who works there.
Have A Positive Attitude
Even on the days where you do not have a lot going on or you are assigned a boring task, keep a positive attitude throughout. As an intern, you may not be doing the most exciting work but instead of dwelling, put your best effort into the task. How you act about less glamorous tasks will show your leader the type of employee you could be in the future.
Prioritize Your Time
If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed about your internship and other things going on your life, take the time to prioritize. If you have work or school in addition to your internship, balance your time accordingly. It is important to stay organized to ensure you do not fall behind.
Don’t Be Afraid To Pitch Ideas
This may be an intimidating task at first but pitching your ideas to your leader shows you are paying attention and have a creative mind. Voicing your ideas could lead to more responsibility and build trust between you and your leader. Although some of your ideas may get rejected, offering your ideas will leave a positive impression on your leader and the company.
Enjoy Every Minute
Whether you are interning during the summer, spring or fall, your internship will fly by quicker than you expected. The best thing you can do as an intern is to stay focused but also try and learn as much as possible. Your internship should be an incredible experience and you were chosen for this position for a reason. If you are able to enjoy yourself, your leader and anyone else you interact with during your internship will always remember your positive spirit.
