When things are uncertain in the workplace, it’s common to have feelings of anxiety or even fear. The problem with this, though, is that when we’re in a state of fear, we hinder our decision-making abilities. With this in mind, here are some common workplace fears and ways you can overcome them!
The Fear of Failure
It’s safe to say that almost everyone has experienced the fear of failure at one time or another. This fear can especially come into play when starting out in a new position or having to learn a new skill for your job. When doing something for the first time, it’s completely understandable to want to do it right! However, being scared of failure can actually hinder your performance.
So how can you overcome this fear? Take it easy on yourself! Do your best to listen to instructions when the task is being explained to you, and don’t be afraid to ask questions! Remember that even if you do make a mistake, you can learn from it so you don’t make the same mistake again.
The Fear of Conflict
The relationships you have in the workplace, whether they be with your coworkers, management, or customers, greatly influence the overall atmosphere. When these interactions run smoothly, work is a much more pleasant place! If you have experienced conflict in the past, you may want to avoid it at all costs. However, this can be an unhealthy strategy as it won’t help you to overcome your fear.
The first step to overcoming your fear of conflict is to realize that conflict is normal and sometimes necessary! It’s impossible to always agree on everything. This is especially true in business, as everyone has different opinions about the way things should be done. When you realize that conflict is natural and perfectly normal, you can begin to overcome your fear and be able to better handle conflict when it arises!
The Fear of Speaking Up
Speaking up is one of the biggest challenges for professionals in today’s workplace. Going against the flow and bringing attention to something that needs to be addressed can be hard, but it’s necessary to create a healthy work environment. For example, speaking up and asking for a raise can be intimidating, especially if you aren’t a natural negotiator.
A great way to help overcome your fear of speaking up is to ask yourself, “What’s the worst thing that could happen?” When you get to the core of why you are afraid to speak up, you can start to work through it and build up the courage. Remember, speaking up when it’s necessary will be worth it in the end!
The Fear of Change
If you’re a creature of habit, change might make you uneasy. You spend a lot of time in your workplace, and when things change from how they have always been, it can be hard to adapt to new office dynamics.
Having a fear of change is completely normal, but there are ways to overcome it! Instead of focusing on the negatives and thinking of unlikely scenarios, focus on ways you can adjust to the change and succeed in the new environment. For example, if you have a new coworker, it might be a good idea to get to know them so that you can build a relationship with them that will benefit you at work!
