Job hunting. Enough said. We’ve all been in those shoes, and know all too well that the process can leave you wishing your real-life Netflix addiction was considered a sought-after career.

When searching for a full-time gig, the abundance of applications and cover letters can seem endless, to the point that if you ever have to address a letter with “madam, or sir” again, you’ll seriously consider selling everything you own to travel around the globe. However, the job hunt process doesn’t have to be a hectic ordeal.

Check out our 5 mistakes to avoid during your hunt below. Believe us, it will totally transform your outlook on the whole task!

Don’t Use a Scattered Application Approach

When the job hunt begins to feel hopeless we tend to apply to anything with the slightest relevance because we keep telling ourselves “I just need a job.” But this is absolutely not the way to go about the job application process. Before you begin applying lay out your goals, and where you want to be in 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, and so on. Don’t waste your time applying for jobs that don’t align with your future aspirations. It will only result in wasted time and potentially landing a job you didn’t even want in the first place!

Don’t Be Afraid to Fail

As like life, the job hunt is a learning process. Rejection shouldn’t be something taken personally, which is easier said than done, we know. But remember, every rejection you face is an opportunity to find something bigger, brighter, and better suited to you. Try to participate in a few practice interviews before you schedule the interview of your dreams. It’s true that practice (sort of) makes perfect!

Don’t Always Stick Strictly to Business

It may not necessarily be okay to chat with the interviewer about the best local breweries. On the other hand, it is perfectly alright to talk to them about company culture; what they love about their company and why they ended up with this company. Interviews can sometimes feel like an interrogation. In reality, it’s a conversation not only about if you are the right fit for the organization, but if the company is the right fit for you!

Take a Deeper Dive

Massive companies have more financial freedom to recruit new talent, and have larger brand awareness. Thus, you’re only seeing less than half of the jobs out in the world. Utilize social media platforms, startup recruitment sites, LinkedIn, and so on to find jobs that may not even be on your radar. You just might find the career of your dreams!

Don’t Lose Sight of What You Want

Remember those goals we spoke about creating above? Don’t lose sight of those! When you are creating those goals, make sure they not only align with your skills, but your interests as well. You want to be in an industry that you can make a genuine impact, and be happy waking up to commute to a job your passionate about each day. With patience and perseverance, you will find the career you set out looking for from the beginning!

During the job hunt, you might put pressure on yourself to find a job immediately, but always remember the cliché saying that, “Things will always work out how they are supposed to.” In addition, avoiding the mistakes listed above will lay solid groundwork to alleviate the heavy weight on your shoulders!
