The Psychology Behind Hair
If you’ve ever heard a blonde joke, and I think you have, then you’re familiar with the stereotypes out there about the assumed correlation between women’s hair and their IQ. It’s no secret that typical male attributes like competitiveness and aggressiveness rule the corporate setting, and that the expectations for our male cohorts in the workplace are sometimes a bit different than they are for us ladies.
In times past, women were taught that they had to keep their hair more masculine and short in the workplace to be considered professional. Funny enough, this mentality has not quite dissolved completely. As a past cosmetologist and a woman with long hair, I was advised to cut my hair prior to starting my graduate business degree because I may not be “taken seriously” with its current length. I was shocked and had not even considered that the length of my hair might affect my credibility! However, on the other hand, studies have shown that conventionally attractive women tend to make more money and get more job offers. So which is it?
Well, thank goodness women have come a long way and we now live in a time where we’re changing the way people see professionalism (ahem, start-ups), and those standards are evolving! We live in a generation with strong female leaders, like Hilary Clinton, who are making waves while rocking the locks of their own choice.
Here at Bloguettes, we’re all about girl power, so instead of rebelling and sticking it to “the man” and showing up to work with big blue hair and a tube top (unless you are Marge Simpson, then by all means!), we’d rather prove them wrong by not letting the general mass associate anything with females and being unprofessional, especially not something as trivial our hair.
In a fascinating Elle Magazine article I read, the author stated something I’d urge everyone to keep it in mind every day:
No matter how society perceives certain hairdos, experts say the most office-appropriate coifs are ultimately the ones that make you feel most comfortable and confident!
Us hardworking girls are competent, but that doesn’t mean we don’t still wanna look cute! Here are just a few simple ideas that can help you to do both when you’re headed out the door to the office!
The Top Knot
The Side Braid
Out of Your Face
Pulled Back in a Pony
Down and Straight
At the end of the day, styling your hair is all about what makes you happy and confident! So, don’t be afraid to have fun with it and try out these new styles!
