With all these on and off monsoon storms in Arizona, we were in serious need of a good book to read under the safety of our blankets. This month, our marketing director Nina picked up this book (more so for the lipstick print on the cover!) and ended up falling head over heels with the life & career lessons found in Aliza Licht’s Leave Your Mark: Land your dream job. Kill it in your career. Rock social media!
As the senior vice president of global communications for Donna Karan International and the voice behind half a million Twitter account, DKNY PR GIRL, it’s fair to say Aliza Licht knows her stuff. The only difference between Aliza and the other head honchos in the fashion industry? She tells us how she got there and everything (we mean, EVERYTHING!) she did, thought, and said in order to get to where she is today!
The book starts with a familiar question most people can relate to: What am I doing with my life?
As a soon-to-be doctor on the road to that white picket fence dream, Aliza realizes her current career path & true passions are on total opposite ends of the spectrum. She drops out of medical school in hopes of pursuing a job in the fashion industry. Even though we, the readers, know her story ends with a ‘happily ever after,’ it didn’t start that way.
Throughout the book, Aliza gives valuable do’s and don’ts for making your way through the professional world whether you’re an intern or a ‘top dog.’ Using humorous stories & eye-opening step-by-step actions, Aliza gives her readers just the inspiration and motivation they need to shift gears and start a new career from scratch.
We asked Nina a few questions and these were her responses:
Who would benefit from reading the book?
If you are someone who has found yourself on a direct path to a career you are not passionate about and find yourself questioning how to start over and move forward with your passion, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU! This read can be used as both leisure and reference. It is inspirational and leads you through the author’s career progression while providing constructive tips anyone can apply in their current career.
What was one of the most important lessons you learned from reading Leave Your Mark?
There are so many takeaways from this book! One of the more important takeaways is that it’s never too late to start again. Starting again and going after your dream is not easy, but certainly attainable. This book not only tells you the author’s success story, it gives you specific ways to get your own success story too!
What were some of your favorite quotes from the book?
- “But at the moment I learned a very important lesson that I have carried throughout my career: You can’t just wait for someone to hand you the ‘in.’ You have to make it yourself.”
- “The thing about getting your first big break is, you have to be enamored with everything. I was the first person to turn on the lights at the office in the morning and usually the last person to leave. I never sat around idle. I always asked if there was something else I should be doing. I thought ahead and would try to take the next logical step so when Dean asked me to do something, I could say it’s already done.”
- “Insider Tip: You don’t get a promotion for doing your job; you get a promotion for going above and beyond your job.”
We must say, after hearing Nina rant and rave about how life-changing this book has been for her, we all wanted to read the book for ourselves. With so much tactical information about writing a killer resume, drafting an email that will get a response, and how to consider if you’re ready for a promotion, we’d suggest having a few highlighters and sticky notes around so when you read something you like (there will be plenty!), you can easily mark & go!
As a company that wants to help people pursue their passion & make brand themselves in the best light, our hearts go out to Aliza for being a prime example that passion can totally turn into your career. Leave Your Mark is such a great reminder that it’s never too late to start again, you just have to be willing to put in the work!
