Ever find yourself feeling over-extended, over-distracted, and overwhelmed? Do you go through the busy work day and find that you haven’t accomplished the most important things on your agenda when you leave the office? I think we all can admit to feeling overworked, but not accomplished. Our world moves at lightning speed, and it can be hard to know when to turn it off.
In an effort to learn what it takes to create healthy habits and live a productive life, we decided to read Manage Your Day-to-Day: Build Your Routine, Find Your Focus, and Sharpen Your Creative Mind by Jocelyn K. Glei for Book Club this month! Read along as our Executive Assistant Anica shares her thoughts on the book and how she’ll be applying what she learned!
Tell us a little bit about Manage Your Day-to-Day: Build Your Routine, Find Your Focus, and Sharpen Your Creative Mind. What is the overall message of the book?
Overall, the book is about starting and keeping habits that will make creating (of any sort) less work and more of a natural flow.
Who do you think can benefit from reading this book?
Really anyone can benefit from reading this book! I do not consider myself a “creative” by traditional standards, but I still feel like I walked away with inspiration as well as concrete ways to make my creative time more productive.
What was one of the most interesting topics the book covers?
I loved that the book was directed towards professionals and how to find time to be creative in a corporate or strict schedule setting. You don’t normally put creative minds and analytical minds in the same category, but we all do have at least a little bit of innovative thinking in us!
Do you have any favorite quotes from the book? If so, what are they?
Anica's Favorite Quotes
“If you want to create something worthwhile with your life, you need to draw a line between the world’s demands and your own ambitions.”
“What I do every day matters more than what I do once in awhile.”
“You have a choice in where to direct your attention. Choose wisely. The world will wait. And if it’s important, they’ll call back.”
“It’s not about ideas, it’s about making ideas happen.”
Did you learn anything new about yourself when reading this book?
Through reading Manage Your Day-to-Day: Build Your Routine, Find Your Focus, and Sharpen Your Creative Mind, I learned that I spend way too much time being busy, but not enough time actually producing. It’s mentioned multiple times in the book how we usually take up productive times of our day doing busy work but not meaningful work. This resonated with me and is something I want to improve!
"We usually take up productive times of our day doing busy work, but not meaningful work."
Would you recommend this book to a friend?
I absolutely would recommend this book to a friend. Reading this was a good reminder to audit my daily tasks and make certain that they reflect my end goals.
How do you plan to apply what you learned?
For starters, I have implemented a “schedule” for myself during free time. I wake up earlier to swim every morning with my pup, and I try to at least tackle something every day for my blog, whether that’s editing photos, writing, or even just planning upcoming posts.
Additionally, I am trying to do one thing every single day that excites me (like make cookies for a friend, learn a new skill, treat myself to a pedicure, have a dance sesh in the kitchen, ANYTHING). I’m doing this in hopes that it will keep me inspired and forward thinking until that mindset is a habit!
