Bloguettes Book Club The 100 Startup - Bloguettes

These days, it seems like everyone wants to be their own boss and turn what they have a passion for into a profitable business. However, the road to launching a business often proves to be a challenging and lonely one that requires sacrificing large amounts of both time and money.

But what if we told you there are people out there who have started successful businesses with less than $100? Seems impossible, right? We thought so too. That’s why when we heard about the book The $100 Startup, we were intrigued and knew we had to read it.

This month, our PR and Brand Outreach Coordinator Reagan read The $100 Startup and is here to share her thoughts! Follow along as she walks us through the book and dishes on whether or not it’s worth reading:

Give us a little overview of The $100 Startup. What’s the overall message of the book?

This book encompasses a lot of different messages, but each message revolves around entrepreneurship and believing in your passion. The author, Chris Guillebeau, identified 1,500 people who made over $50,000 from their startup businesses and chose to focus on the 50 most interesting people. As the title says, most of these people invested less than $100 in their business.

Although the book is a pretty simple read, there are a lot of lessons shared that are easily applicable to everyday life. For most of these entrepreneurs, their business was built around their passion and filling a need they saw in the world. The three key takeaways from the book are:

  1. 1

Passion is only one part of the equation, you’ll need a set of skills and a base of customers to ensure success.

  2. 2

    Focus on keeping costs low.

  3. 3

Keep your business plans simple. Your entire outline should fit on a single piece of paper.

Who do you think can benefit from reading this book?

Honestly, anyone with an idea for a business or a passion can benefit from this book. Even though the book is centered around starting a business, it also offers a lot of insight on managing your money. Each entrepreneur highlighted in the book had different passions and built their business in their own way. With so many unique people, anyone is bound to learn something from this book!

Did you learn anything from the book that surprised you?

After reading every entrepreneur’s story, I realized that although I have always dreamt about owning my own business, I have no idea what I would want my own business to be. There are a lot of things I am passionate about but as I thought about each one, I couldn’t see it being successful. Despite this realization, I still hope to start a business one day!

Has this book changed your viewpoint in any way? If so, how?

Most of the stories I have read or heard about how people started their businesses revolved around mass amounts of funding or investment. I was really excited to read this book because I knew I was going to hear stories about those individuals who were successful without having millions of dollars in funding. I realize that not everyone in the book is making millions, but they were still able to launch a successful business with little to no money. Reading this book has definitely changed my viewpoint on the process of starting a business, especially from a financial standpoint.

Tell us some of your favorite quotes!

There were so many inspirational and helpful quotes in this book (as I expected there to be) but here are few of my faves:

  1. 1

“Value is created when a person makes something useful and shares it with the world.” -Chris Guillebeau

  2. 2

“Good things happen to those who hustle.” —ANAÏS NIN

  3. 3

“If you make your business about helping others, you’ll always have plenty of work.”-Chris Guillebeau

How are you planning to apply what you learned?

Reading this book provided me with a lot of tips when it comes to starting a business, managing your money and following your passions. I also learned a lot about myself and I plan to apply what I’ve learned to what I am passionate about. Everyone is passionate about something and some of those people can turn their passions into a business, but there are so many additional factors that go into building a successful and profitable business. This book has shown me that I am at the perfect age to explore what I am passionate about so I hope to apply what I’ve learned to my everyday life!
