Like diamonds, hashtags are a girl’s best friend. They’re useful for any and every kind of business, and they can be used to expand your influence beyond your current following. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t want more followers and increased brand exposure and influence? We sure do.

Why Hashtags Are Useful

  • Hashtags enable you to strategically incorporate your topics into the social media world, where they’re now condensed and clickable for new followers to find.
  • Hashtags expand your content reach and target market.
  • Hashtags can improve your SEO (search engine optimization).
  • Hashtags can grow your following and increase engagement.
  • By using hashtags, you can showcase your company’s voice!
  • Hashtags can be used to categorize your own content. For example, we do this here at Bloguettes by using #bloguettes!

A Little #History

So, what exactly are hashtags? Hashtags are a word or phrase used after the # sign that generate easily searchable topics of discussion. First used on internet relay chats, hashtags were intermixed into live chats and messaging so that users could enter a topic of conversation with the click of a single word or phrase. Although, the symbol truly became relevant when it was used on Twitter. For tech-junkies, the tool is also referred to as a “metadata tag.”

Time to Strategize… 4 Tips & 1 Rule

At this point, you might be wondering exactly how to find the right hashtags for your business. Here are four simple ways to find the perfect hashtags!

5 Ways to Find Hashtags

  1. 1

Use Instagram’s search function. Instagram allows you to search keywords relevant to your brand under the “tags” search tab. Results will show you all of the popular hashtags with your keyword in them, along with how popular each tag is. Handy, we know!

  2. 2

Check out what the competition is doing. We aren’t condoning any rivalries, but every business has one! So, scope out the competition and see what tags they’re using. If they represent your brand well, you now have another tag added to your collection. If not, you now know what words to avoid to ensure your following is your intended audience. #Sneaky

  3. 3

Follow industry role modelsEvery brand has a role model. You have goals to reach, so why not learn from the best on how to reach them? Check out any influential accounts to see what tags got their claim to fame!

  4. 4

Trust yourself. Browse through your own posts and see what past uploads got the most attention and what hashtags you used in them. Pick out the already effective hashtags, and stay consistent with them in future posts!

  5. 5

Use your resources. Tools like Iconosquare can be super helpful, or even using Google to search for popular hashtags is a great method!

The Golden Rule

Wondering how many hashtags to use? This depends on the platform! On Twitter, it’s best to use 2 hashtags. Any more than this can decrease post activity by 17 percent! When it comes to Instagram, 30 is the limit. However, 11+ is your best bet for high interactions! We recommend mixing popular hashtags with relevant hashtags that aren’t as popular, so your photo won’t disappear as fast!

Get #Educated

Did you know that you can hide your hashtags on Instagram? Simply use a text editor, like Notes on your iPhone, to save all of your hashtags in a paragraph. Add 5 dots, each on their own separate line, and add your hashtags under the 5th dot. Copy & paste this all into a caption on your photo and just like that, your hashtags will be hidden and won’t crowd your caption! It should look a little something like this:

In addition to this, there’s also a way to create a keyboard shortcut for your hashtags! Open the Notes app, type out the group of hashtags you want to use, copy all of the text, and open the Settings app. Tap general, keyboard, text replacement, and then “+.” In “Phrases,” paste your hashtags, and in “Shortcut,” type the word you want to trigger the hashtags. Finally, tap save in the top right corner, and you’re good to go! Whenever you type out your keyword, your hashtags will appear! Here’s what the process will look like:
