Finding Your Blogging Niche

So, you want to start a blog? We couldn’t be more excited! Many of you might know your interests and exactly what you want to write about, but the other half of you are probably stuck on a blank screen wondering what the heck you’re doing. Well good news is we are here to guide you to your blogging destiny!

Blogs prove to be more successful when the topic is pretty consistent. In the blogging world, we call this a “niche” or “a distinct segment of a market.” Basically, a niche is your specialty and what your blog will be centered around. Without it, your blog can lose direction and readers.

So how do you find your blogging niche? That’s what we’re here for!

Identify Your Passion

This may seem obvious, but a lot of people choose to write about what they think their audience wants instead of what they themselves personally love. You may have a basic idea of your interests, but what are you really passionate about? Ask yourself, “What is something I could talk about for hours?” Get out a pen and paper and start writing down everything you’re interested in! Now that you have a visual of what topics you enjoy, it’s time to start narrowing them down. Start by crossing out the inflexible subjects that would be hard to expand on and with the topics you have left over, expand on each one. Jot down five blog post ideas for each topic and if you can’t come up with at least five, maybe it’s not the niche for you. Remember, it’s important to think outside the box! For example, you may love pizza and some would assume this to be a limiting topic, but there’s potential for everything. You could review local pizzerias or try out crazy recipes! All we’re saying is, don’t be too quick to shut down a passion!

Pinpoint Your Strengths

Now, you may love pizza, but are cursed with lousy cooking skills. That’s why it’s important to be honest about your strengths. If you can’t execute pizza recipes without burning the edges and shedding a few tears, you’re probably not going to want to write to people about how great a cook you are (unless you want to document your journey of how you went from lousy cook to an amazing one–see, the ideas never end!). Take an honest look at your skills and see what you are actually good at! If it helps, make another list–it could serve as a good ego boost!

Determine Your Vision

You don’t have to have it all figured out in the beginning, but having a basic vision is important. Determine what you want your content to look like. Is it photo-based? Word heavy? Mixed media? Videos? There are so many options, so get excited! You may also want to decide how often you want to post. Make a goal to post “x” amount of times a week and stick to it! A great tip is to keep a notebook by your bedside or in your purse and write down inspiration as it comes!

Leave Your Comfort Zone

Always remember, you don’t need to be an expert in something to write about it! Sometimes it’s better to pick a niche that you’re not 100% comfortable with. This will keep you inspired to try new things and push yourself out of your bubble. Your niche will lead you to many interesting experiences and people, so why not choose something you want to learn more about?
