Jenica Parcell is the woman behind the growing blog A Slice of Style. She loves finding the latest deals and sharing them with her followers, so it’s really no wonder her blog is becoming a favorite among readers everywhere–who doesn’t love a good deal?
Located in Utah, she skis, hikes, and builds campfires in her beautiful backyard. A Slice of Style is really just a slice of Jenica… and we love what she has to offer!
How long have you been blogging? I have been blogging since March of 2014. It has been a whirlwind ever since constantly learning and growing my blog!
How did you come up with the idea? I started my blog almost a year ago because I wanted to share my passion with others that everyone can save a lot of money if they are smart and shop sales. My mom taught me at a young age some smart tricks to buying the things you want at a good price. I would buy clothes, home décor, jewelry and everything in between for great deals and my friends and family were always amazed at how great the deals I found were.
My sister-in-law even joked that she was just going to give me her credit card so that I could buy good deals when I found them for her. With everyone always asking me how and where I got my good deals, I decided to start a blog to share with others when I found good deals so everyone could benefit! I will also occasionally share my favorite recipe as well because I love to cook and bake. In fact, I brought cookbooks as my reading material on my honeymoon! A Slice of Style is where I share my passions.
What was the hardest part of getting started? The hardest part of getting started was actually setting up the blogging template to look like how I wanted it to! Looking back on it, it would have saved me countless hours if I would have just hired someone who does that for a living. It would have saved a lot of stress!
How do you maintain a balance between other aspects of your life and blogging? This is a hard one. With work, my church responsibilities, laundry, cleaning, making meals, going to the gym, wanting to spend quality time with my husband…it’s hard to find balance!
I would suggest making a strict schedule and really sticking with it. If you say you’re only going to work on your blog for an hour then go to the gym…don’t be sitting there at your desk 2 hours later! Step away from the computer and put your mouse down. If something isn’t working, rearrange. The important thing is sticking to your schedule so that you can accomplish everything that you want to get done.
How do you stay connected with bloggers and creatives like yourself? The best way I have found to stay connected is through Facebook groups with local bloggers, events and conferences where I meet new people and network, and through social media like Instagram. If there is something that you really connect with, collaborate with them on a post or giveaway!
What’s your favorite social media channel for personal use? Instagram. Right now I just have one account for business purposes with A Slice of Style but I do share personal photos there as well. My goal is to connect with my readers so that they feel like they know me a little bit. I want to be the friend that lets let know about the incredible sale they’ve been waiting for!
Who do you look up to? I look up to many people, but one person who stands out is my mother. She is always, always kind to people and doesn’t talk poorly about anyone. She always looks for the good in each situation and has such a positive perspective. She makes big problems seem small and manageable.
I am trying to cultivate her incredible attitude about life! When I feel like I have obstacles that are too big to overcome and I get overwhelmed, a couple minutes on the phone with her is all I need to get right back on track and go forward with my day feeling like I can accomplish what I want to. I am trying to be more like her so I can empower others!
What advice do you have for other bloggers? Write and share what you are passionate about. If you aren’t absolutely passionate about what you are writing about then you are going to get burned out. Also, be gentle with yourself. You are going to make mistakes, you are going to say something that comes off the completely wrong way when you had good intentions, and people are going to criticize you no matter what you do. When you do something wrong, apologize and move forward. Don’t look back!
You will only progress if you can let things go, learn from them and continue forward. It will do you no good to dwell on the past. We can learn from each trial and challenge if we let it build us up into stronger people instead of letting it break us!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? I’m going to talk about the best advice I received about blogging. This is going to sound like common sense, but for me it was an “ah ha!” moment. As mentioned above, it’s hard to find balance with all of the responsibilities that we have, but we need to make it easier on ourselves and this piece of advice has really helped me be less stressed out about managing it all.
Don’t check your email unless you can respond right then! I have my email installed to my phone so I would constantly be checking it all day (when I was in line at the grocery store, when I was walking to my car, etc) and then I would be stressed out about not being able to respond right then. The emails would weigh on my mind as something I needed to get done. Wait until you are sitting at your desk and have time to respond. I promise it will make you feel a lot less stressed out!
What do you love about blogging? I love sharing what I am passionate about… living within your means and being able to afford the things that you want by being smart with your money. My favorite thing is when someone tells me that they got a good deal on something that they have wanted for a really long time but haven’t been able to afford. It makes me feel so good!
