Tell us a little about your backgrounds and how you started Pura Vida.
I graduated from SDSU in 2010 and majored in business marketing, and Paul with business finance. A few weeks after graduation, we took a surf trip to Costa Rica simply in search of waves and a good time. One day on our way back to the hotel, we stumbled upon two bracelet vendors on the sidewalk. We took the bracelets back to our room and the idea was born.
How did you come up with the name of your company?
Pura Vida is the slogan of Costa Rica, just like the word “aloha” from Hawaii.
What do your bracelets represent?
The pura vida lifestyle is embodied by the enjoyment of a life lived slowly, the celebration of good fortune, and the refusal to take anything for granted. It’s about being free and living life to the fullest; it’s an attitude.
What has been your greatest accomplishment up to date?
- 2015 Forbes 30 Under 30
- 2015 Inc. 5,000 Fastest Growing Companies in America
- Donating over $600,000 to our charity partners
- Providing over 100 people in Costa Rica with full-time jobs
What kind of social media campaigns have you done to gain more follower engagement?
To grow our Instagram account to the size it is, we partner with models, photographers, influencers, and brands on a weekly basis. We have a strict posting schedule and always post consistent content that is on-brand with our mission.
What are 3 things you look for when you collaborate with other companies?
When looking to partner with other companies on Instagram, I look for over a 200k follower count and around 3-5% fan engagement.
How has partnering with other brands on social media helped you grow your company?
This has helped a lot actually. It allows us to share our story with other brand’s fan bases, instantly shedding light on the Pura Vida story, mission, and products.
If you had to describe your company in three words, what would you pick?
Colorful, charity, bracelets.
If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice before you started Pura Vida, what would you tell yourself?
If I could start over, I would put a heavy focus on building a strong customer email list from day 1, not year 1.
What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as a company?
As a whole, we always try to improve our core products and customer service. We want our fans to grow with us and build out their Pura Vida collection because they love our bracelets and the people who work here, simple as that. We also make sure to have new, creative product releases scheduled out just about every 3-6 months.
