At Bloguettes, we work with SEO and Google Analytics expert Meg Clarke. She’s the founder of Clapping Dog Media and is a pro at getting sites found for what they want to be known for and using analytics to craft the perfect site strategy. So, we thought what better way to teach our audience all about how to use Google Analytics than to have her come speak at The Workshop?

Tell us a little bit about your background and how you got to where you are today!
I began my career as a web designer. I spent several years working at boutique agencies around the Washington DC area– I loved it. left agency life and began freelance designing after my husband and I brought our adopted boys home. I needed to stay home with them and I also wanted to fuel my creative side.
I left the design part of projects after I helped create several beautiful sites for clients that had awesome services. My clients poured money and time into their new site, but they struggled to bring in traffic. It was then that I dove head first into SEO and Analytics to figure out how to bring traffic to beautiful sites.
There is nothing worse than a beautifully designed site that doesn’t convert traffic to customers!
Why is it so important for bloggers and businesses to invest in their SEO?
It is SOOOOOOOO important because there are over 4 billion Google searches a day! If you want to be on page 1, you need a solid SEO strategy or your amazing product will get lost in the crowd.
Where does Google Analytics come into play?
Google Analytics is key because it provides valuable insights about your traffic. With Google Analytics we can figure out where your traffic is coming from and what they do once they land on your site, this all helps us figure out how to get more traffic!
What are some key metrics to watch in Google Analytics?
There are several Google Analytics metrics that I regularly track. One of the most important thing to understand is where your traffic is coming from (Acquisition > Overview). Once we figure out where users are coming from we can strategize on how to get more of them whether the traffic is coming from Google, Instagram or referrals.
I also look at the most popular pages on the site (Behavior > Site Content > All Pages), it is super important to know what pages are resonating with your audience so that you can write more of them!
What tips do you have for someone who is just starting out and wants to boost their site’s SEO?
I always tell people that good business is good SEO. If you work on your business with the goal of helping and making an impact for your clients, then your site will be found.
It has been proven again and again that if you consistently provide valuable content and ensure that the site is easy to navigate and load, then Google will reward you with a higher rank.

The online world is always changing. How can businesses keep up?
Yes, there are aspects that do change a lot, but the foundation remains the same. Good business sites need to be user friendly, fast, and consistently provide excellent information. While, there are regular tweaks to the algorithm, these core principles don’t change.
What would you say is the biggest challenge that businesses face when trying to get recognized by Google?
The biggest challenge I see is consistency. Google is a business it wants to provide the best results to the user so it is constantly crawling the web for new, detailed, content. Google believes that if a site is up to date and is posting regularly then it is a good resource for users.
What is your favorite part about helping businesses get found by Google?
My favorite, favorite part is helping clients find a new audience through organic search. There are more potential clients who google daily then are on all of the social networks. If you are found by Google, you don’t have to be on every platform.

I can’t wait for the Google Analytics Workshop! I am going share tips on how to get the most data out of Google Analytics without spending hours down confusing rabbit holes. I am also going to share how to build a smart marketing strategy with the data from analytics. My goal is to empower entrepreneurs to understand their data and to not be intimidated by it.
When you’re not busy helping clients grow their online presence, what can we find you doing?
When I am not working, I am playing with my 3 boys and adorable husband. I am often found in my not-so-mini-van driving here to there. I enjoy a good podcast and a slow run first thing in the morning.
