You only have seven seconds to make a good first impression, and that applies on social media, too! Though the images you post and the tone of voice you use are both extremely important when using Instagram, your biography, or “bio” is one of the first things a user sees when they come to your profile, so it’s important to make it a good one!
Your Instagram bio is like the “About Me” section on your website – it explains who you are, what you do, and gives your audience a peek into your personality. Though this may sound simple, it can be hard to fit all of that into 150 characters.
Start With A Name
Make sure the fields for both your name AND username are filled out on your profile. When you edit your Instagram Profile, it’ll ask you for your name first and your username second. If your username isn’t your real name, including your full name in the first slot is your chance to be found in search by friends who don’t know your username. Be sure to use the same username across all of your social media handles to keep your branding consistent!
What To Say:
Obviously, you aren’t going to have room to include all of this. What you do include though will vary on your niche. Are you a blogger? An online shop? A small business? Let what you do dictate how you choose the content of your bio.
- Who you are
- What you do / hobbies
- Location (if relevant)
- Snapchat handle
- Hashtags in your community (i.e. #bloguettes)
- Call to action (i.e. Join the community! Purchase product in our Etsy shop!)
Did you know that you can center the text on your bio? Learn how here. You can also space text across multiple lines by typing it out in a note on your phone and copy and pasting it into your bio. Trust us when we say editing your layout is SO much easier if you do it from your desktop!
After you have all of your content, make it unique! Add your favorite emojis, a fun fact, or anything special that goes with your brand. Give your followers a reason to follow or contact you, but leave them wanting more!
This is your chance to call attention to any of your prime content. Maybe it’s your website, your latest blog post, or a YouTube video, but make sure to update it as you draw attention to it! At Bloguettes, we shorten all of our links with bit.ly first, then post them! We also change our link multiple times a day. Depending on our most recent Instagram picture, we’ll link our users to blog posts, where they can buy workshop tickets, and where they can access our webinars!
If you utilize these tricks, you’ll be sure to see more followers, more engagement, and more traffic to your blog or website. If you find yourself stuck for content for writing in your bio, check out what your competition has in theirs! Obviously, we don’t suggest copying it, but it might get your creative gears turning!
