Let’s set the scene.
You’re right in the middle of the honk-and-hustle of deep downtown. You’re waiting for coffee outside your favorite shop and all of a sudden, you see a bubblegum pink poodle wearing a black-and-white striped shirt & a red beret. You look up to feast your eyes on the owner that managed to balance a beret on a dog and to your viewing pleasure, the owner is wearing the EXACT SAME OUTFIT. Your next step is quite obvious. You whip out your Snapchat, take a pic, flick to the right to add a Downtown LA geofilter (because, where else would you see this?), and upload it to your story.
We’re all about Snapchat. It’s fun, it’s quick, and those artsy on-demand geofilters can always take your Snap game up a notch. But the best thing about Snapchat geofilters? You can make your own!
Whether you’re turning up for your bestie’s bachelorette party in Vegas, dabbing tears at your childhood friend’s wedding, or hosting a giant marketing conference for your company, there are so many opportunities to create cool geofilters. Keep reading to see the creation process!
Create Your Design
The first thing you need to do is create your design. Think about the event or occasion and figure out what kind of look you want. If you have text in your design, make sure it’s legible! No one will use your geofilter if they can’t read what it says. Something else to keep in mind: your geofilter will be made public for people in the same vicinity. Don’t make a design that could potentially offend or put anyone in harm’s way. Another side note: your design will ultimately be put into an approval process, so if you’re thinking of doing something intensely stupid, you may want to think again.
Choose Your Date/Duration/Location
Once you have your design, you’ll head to the Snapchat website and go to On-Demand Geofilters. You’ll be asked to log in and will be taken through a series of pre-approval pages. You’ll need to know the days your geofilter will be live, the duration (Snapchat will ask you your specific hours), and the location of where the geofilter will be set.
Once you upload your design and have decided your Snapchat geofilter’s specific settings, you’ll be given a price estimate. Everyone’s prices will be different as the length of time, days of the week, square footage of the design, and location demand can all affect the price.
Submit For Approval
Snapchat asks users for 1-2 business days in the approval process. (We’ve submitted a few geofilters for our workshops and can say they are super quick to respond and usually have an update to you within 24 hours!)
Check Your Insights
If you’ve been approved, you’ll pay, and your Snapchat geofilter will be up and ready to go the day of your event! After your session has expired, you’ll be able to go into your account and get basic insights on how many times your geofilter was used.
And that’s that! Creating your own Snapchat geofilter isn’t just for celebrities and giant Coachella-sized conferences anymore. If you happen to create your own geofilter (or download one of our Snapchat geofilter templates) after reading this post, make sure to leave us a comment and tell us all about it!
