Inexpensive Prop Ideas for Blog Photos
What better way to save money than to utilize what you already have around the house? Many times we overlook some of the everyday items we have laying around. Adding in an ordinary item can make a photo more relatable, not to mention cute.
Here are some items that you might already have at home that can make great photo props!
Fabric & Textures
A great place to start when looking to add visual interest to your photos is your very own closet! Go through your wardrobe and look for things that will make your photo pop–maybe it’s a dress with a fun pattern or a denim jacket. Blankets and bedding are also great for photos! The key here is to look for patterns and textures that you can use as backgrounds or main pieces for your photos.
Grab that white plate and put some cookies on it, or fill your favorite mug up with coffee. Everyday kitchen items can actually be great props for photos!
In addition to making your home smell amazing, a candle can make a great addition to photos. Lit candles can really add a homey, cozy vibe.
Books and Magazines
Books and magazines can make for a fun background, flat lay, or focus in any picture.
A touch of greenery can make any photo pop! So, grab your potted cactus or bouquet of flowers and snap a shot.

Photo Styling Tips
Now that you have all of your props, it’s time to put them to use! Here are some of our favorite tricks when it comes to styling and taking photos.
Stick To A Theme
When designing your blog, you probably stuck with a few main colors from the color wheel. Utilize those colors to create a cohesive theme in line with your blog! We suggest choosing four to five main colors that you find yourself drawn to and stick with it.
When it comes to putting together a photo, remember those colors and try your best to use them in the shoot in any way possible.
Focus On a Core Piece
There’s always a focus in a photo; whether it be a person, place, or thing. Use that main focus item and build around it. This will give the photo balance!
Experiment with Backgrounds
Backgrounds will make or break a photo. You want to keep it simple so it doesn’t overpower the shot, while still complimenting it all the same. At Bloguettes, we love using our beautiful neutral colored walls as backdrops for our shoots. Some other background options include:
- Wooden Table
- Marble Adhesive
Add Some Personality
Add a little bit of flair in your photos! People like to see you in the pictures, because it makes them more relatable and human-like. Photos with hands or even a glimpse of a person always seem to be more of a hit than photos of just items. Incorporate a bit of your style into the pictures – you are using them for yourself, you know!
Keep things consistent by using the same editing strategies for each photo. Same filter, contrast, exposure, saturation, temperature, etc. It gets distracting if you’re all over the place with your filters and editing styles. You want people to recognize your brand and aesthetic at first glance!
It’s All About the Angles
The angle in which you take your photos makes all the difference. When you’ve set up your flat lay, experiment with capturing the photo in different ways. This can give the shot a totally different feel and allow you to use it for different purposes! For example, if you take the photo with a lot of negative space, you can go back in and add text to it for Pinterest graphics.
