Getting Started with the Facebook Inbox

Facebook’s Inbox feature is new to the scene, and it’s slowly becoming available to all FB users across the globe. Some users have had access to the new feature via mobile, while others have on desktop.

So how do you know if this new features is available to you? On your mobile device, you’ll see that your toolbar with your analytics, inbox, and notifications icons will move to the bottom of your screen, like so:

On desktop, you’ll notice that your banner has a new ‘Inbox’ tab instead of the Messages tab.

How the Feature Works

If you’ve determined that this new feature is available, what are you waiting for? It’s time to start using it.

First, you’ll need to connect your Facebook and Instagram accounts. If you’ve already upgraded your Instagram account to a business profile and connected it to your Facebook page, you’re ready to start. If you haven’t done this yet, you’ll be prompted to log into your Instagram account when you open your inbox and tap on the Instagram tab. You’ll then be guided through the setup process!

Once you’ve done this, you’ll be notified that you can start reading and replying to comments on your Insta posts when you open your FB Inbox. If you have the Facebook business page app, this will update automatically.

If you’re using this new feature on mobile and want to view all of your notifications from Messenger, your FB page, and Insta account, click the ‘All’ tab. If you want to view only your Instagram notifications, tap the ‘Instagram’ tab.

With this new feature, we love that you can view the thumbnail images of posts that received comments while also showing the first line of the caption. You can also view the usernames of people who leave comments and the time of the most recent comment.

When you tap on a post notification, you’ll see the comment thread on the post including your responses. This feature works the same on desktop!

How to Organize Your Notifications

Just like organizing your email inbox, you can organize the messages in your Facebook inbox.

For starters, any new messages in your inbox are bold, and once you’ve opened them, they become unbolded. You can then choose to file notifications under folders or mark them as unread. If you want to mark the notification as ‘done,’ click the checkmark. To move the notification to the ‘Follow-Up’ folder, simply click the clock icon. On mobile, you’ll tap the three-dot or gear icon to do this. Organizing your notifications can help you to stay on track and manage your comments effectively! This is especially beneficial for businesses that have multiple people managing one Instagram account.

Our Thoughts

We think this new feature makes managing social media a whole lot more efficient! By having access to both your Instagram and FB in one place, it saves you the time it takes to have to hop back and forth between the apps. Also, like we mentioned before, the Facebook Inbox can be extremely handy for teams who manage social media for a business. If certain team members don’t have direct access to the company’s Instagram, they can still help with managing comments through the Facebook inbox.

Lastly, we also like the fact that this new feature enables you to edit details of your Instagram account within Facebook, like your account name, username, website URL, bio description, and contact info. This can be easily done through your Settings!
