Tell us a little about Jake Duke Studios and how it came to be.

General definition: Jake Duke Studios is an event rental company that offers eclectic furniture and décor. We specialize in designing spaces and creating moments for our clients and their guests.

I believe my love for parties is in my DNA. My mother would throw a party for practically any reason growing up and did I love her so for doing it! You can imagine after throwing over 100 parties over the course of 30+ years, I have built up quite a collection of fun props and décor. In 2013, and after many discussions with my husband, I decided to take a leap of faith and quit my corporate day job after 11 years to join the entrepreneur club.

Unfortunately, the club wasn’t so glamorous at first due to the simple fact that I was running my business out of my garage with no AC and minimal shelf space for my rental collection due to my husband’s Chevy truck parts. Thankfully, those days are long gone and we are now in a 6,000 sq ft warehouse with offices that have working AC!

Is there a story behind the Jake Duke Studios name?

The year was 1983 and Cabbage Patch Dolls were the biggest thing to hit the stores. I was 6 years old and desperately wanted to have one of them. It was the only thing I wished for that Christmas and I hoped one of the wrapped presents under the tree would be my doll. That year, Santa (aka my awesome parents) did get me the doll I wanted and when I tore open the box to find the birth certificate to reveal his name, it was Jake Duke.

P.S. In case you are wondering, I still have the doll and his birth certificate to this day. He is a redheaded freckled doll which inspired the color of our logo.


How important is décor and furniture when it comes to events?

I think furniture and decor are equally as important to the food you serve at your event. You want your guests to forget about all the worries at home or work and escape into an event filled with great food and a great atmosphere.

What is the hardest part of being a décor rental company?

The hardest part of being a décor rental company is deciding which trends you want to invest in. As much as we would love to buy every trend that comes our way, we have to decide how long we think it will stick around, or else we are stuck with merchandise sitting on our shelves not being rented. On a positive note, most trends almost always come back. Remember the hippie boho vibe in the 60s? Well, it’s back!

What is the most rewarding part?

On average, each event takes approximately 6-9 months to plan and design. So when the day finally comes and the vision is now a reality and executed perfectly, it is by far the most rewarding moment.

What kind of events have you typically been a part of? What has been the most interesting event?

We currently do about 50% weddings and 50% corporate and social events, like birthday parties and baby showers. Although we have been a part of a lot of interesting events, the one that sticks out the most in my mind is when we were asked to design and set David Tutera’s 50th birthday party. He is a celebrity event planner and has been in the event industry for over 25 years. For him and his team to trust us with the décor design, that was an unforgettable feeling and event.

What are 3 things to keep in mind when figuring out décor for your event?

    Decide on a color palette! We know every time you see a new pin pop up on your Pinterest board, you fall in love with a new color, but once you have decided on your colors, stick to it! Trust me, this will keep the design process moving along.

    Create a vignette! You can create fun stations, like a lounge area or a delicious dessert bar, for your guests to enjoy. It is much more pleasing to the eye to create vignettes than trying to decorate every inch of your event space and lose the whole feel of your event.

    Layer your designs! First, start by picking out the large furniture (for example, a lounge area). You can pick a sofa, coffee table, side tables, and chairs. Once you have decided on that, you can add the next layer of design by adding in your smaller décor such as accent pillows, candles, and other small accessories. Lastly, you can add your final layer of design with some fresh florals.
