Snapchat has stolen the spotlight lately, and for a good reason! The famous app has rolled out several new updates that are changing the game and setting them apart from their biggest competitor…Instagram Stories.
Today, we’re here to break down all of these new updates–from Snap Maps to the new ability to share links. Fasten your seatbelts, because there’s a lot to cover!
Let’s dive in!
Alright, now this new update seems to be the most controversial out of the bunch. Snapchat’s new Map feature allows users to see the locations of their friends at any time, as well as view Stories that are posted locally and around the world! To use the feature, simply go to your camera view and place two fingers on the screen and pinch them together–this should pull up the map. To see the location of your friends, simply tap on their character!
This in-app map is designed to drive engagement on Snapchat as well as give it a competitive edge over other platforms like Instagram and even Facebook. For users, it’s a fun way to stay connected to friends and stay up-to-date with what’s happening around the world.
For businesses, on the other hand, it could be a way to target based on location. For example, businesses could pay to be visible on a user’s map when they’re in the vicinity, which can lead them to pay a visit to their storefront. Or, it could provide an alternate revenue channel. Companies can use location data to to better target users with notifications and contextual advertising!
Now, of course, we can’t talk about Snap Maps without addressing the privacy concerns. You might be thinking. “But what if I don’t want my friends to know where I am every second of the day?” Well, that’s a legitimate concern. But no need to fear–because there is a way to hide your location! In fact, your location is automatically turned off unless you manually turn it on. So, if you haven’t turned it on, it’s not public!
However, if you have turned your location on and want to change it, simply pinch the home screen with two fingers and select the icon in the top right-hand corner. Then, turn on ‘Ghost Mode’ to hide your location.
This is an update we were excited to see! Similar to Instagram Stories’ new swipe-up feature, Snapchatters can now share links with one another. Simply tap the vertical toolkit and type a link to share…it’s that easy! The perk with this feature in Snapchat is that anyone can use it, whereas on Instagram Stories, your account must be verified or have a following of at least 10k.
Backdrops allow Snapchatters to place images so they appear to be behind people or objects in photos. To do so, tap the scissors icon in the vertical toolkit and select the diagonally striped square icon. Trace over the part of the image you want to be in front of the background, choose the image you want to be in the backdrop, and you’ll have a one-of-a-kind Snap to share! Voice filters were previously only available with Snapchat’s live filter lenses, but now, you can give your voice a new tune when recording any Snap. Choose from a variety of character voice filters–including an alien, chipmunk, robot, and more!
Last but not least, Snap’s new update also gives users the ability to create their own geofilters! Whether it’s for a birthday party, wedding, or work event, you can create your own geofilter easily and share it with friends. Simply design your own custom filter or use one of Snapchat’s templates, pick a time and location for your filter, and submit your geofilter and have it reviewed within one business day. Prices start at $5.99!
