Have you ever heard of Iconosquare? If you’re even half as Instagram-obsessed as we are, you’re definitely going to want to check it out. It’s a site that shows you your Instagram stats day-to-day, and allows you to track your brand, business or blog’s progress. It also provides insight into your followers, their behavior, and what you might be able to do to gain (or lose) more them. Speaking of followers…as we’re sure you all know, the big Instagram purge of 2014 has happened–and there are lots of people who aren’t happy about, and understandably so. To see your following drop hundreds, thousands or even millions overnight can be scary! But we’re positive it’s all beneficial. Who wants spammy, fake followers anyway? Sure they inflate your numbers, but they do nothing for your user engagement which is what really matters. Quality over quantity right?

Here’s where Iconosquare really comes in handy. It is awesome for measuring user engagement. Before we go any further, head on over to Iconosquare and sign in with your Instagram credentials. It doesn’t cost a thing and it can teach you a ton about how to optimize your Instagram account. There’s so much information to glean from all the data provided, but here’s how and why we use Iconosquare.

Finding the Best Time to Post

The bigger grey circles are when you should be posting. The black circles are when you’re actually posting. Do they match up? If not, consider mixing up the times and days you’re posting. We’re guilty of posting Monday through Friday, during the workday. But check out our stats! According to Iconosquare, we should be posting at times we haven’t even considered! 8pm on a Wednesday!? Who woulda thought!

Determining the Lifespan of Your Instagram (yes, it is a thing)

See that little yellow line? It’s basically saying that after 2 or 3 hours, our Instagram post is dead, meaning that it likely won’t garner any additional likes or comments. But this information is huge for anyone who is using Instagram to know! If the lifespan of your posts is 12 hours, well rock on! And maybe consider not posting right before the majority of your community’s bedtime, so your post has all day to bask in 12 full hours of likes and follower engagement. If the lifespan of your Instagram is much shorter, you know that you can post multiple times per day as long as you’re giving ample space in between, because your users have seen your previous post, loved on it, and are ready for more!

Develop a Hashtag Strategy

The white hashtags are hashtags we’ve used, and the black ones are the most popular hashtags on Instagram at the moment. If you’re really aiming to use hashtag campaigns to gain likes and followers, check out this page. You’ll immediately know which hashtags to use, but we always advise only using ones that are truly relevant to your post. If not, people will notice your spammy behavior and it could turn them off. As we mentioned before, Iconosquare is a great tool for learning more about Instagram and seeing what you might be able to do better. Play around, check out the graphs (and if you aren’t a graph person, check out the ‘Snapshots’ tab), and learn more about your community and followers. Social media doesn’t work without a strategy, and using a site like Iconosquare is your first step in creating an effective one!
